Bentley fleshed out the Bentayga lineup just a little more for 2022 with the Bentayga S model, which slots performance-wise and price-wise between the Bentayga and the Bentayga Speed. The sporty variant doesn’t improve on the 4.0L V8 Bentayga’s basic numbers—542 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque—but it does add performance handing features that make justify its roughly $40,000 premium over the standard V8 Bentayga.
Was the Speed variant of the ‘uncommon’ SUV too darn fast for some buyers? Perhaps. But it’s more likely that the V8-equipped Bentayga has been outspeeding the Speed on the sales floor. The Speed is, as of 2021, the only way to order a Bentayga with Bentley’s ferocious W12 engine; the 6.0L beastie can propel the vehicle to 190 MPH, which—again, as of the 2021 model year—puts it at the top of the performance SUV heap, getting it past the Lamborghini Urus. But it still only bests the V8 by 10 MPH.
The new Bentayga S keeps the standard Bentayga’s V8 engine, but puts a little more pepper in the driving experience. Tops on the list of S-specific standard features: revised torque vectoring, a ‘Sport’ driving mode and a stiffer version of Bentley’s adaptive suspension.
The Bentayga starts at $183K, while the Speed begins at $251K. The Bentayga S is priced from $223K. But the hybrid version can be had for $166K, and that might be the best option for those looking to get a taste of electrification without sacrificing cachet.
