Maple Leafs center Joe Thornton — formerly of the San Jose Sharks — listed his Italianate in Los Gatos this spring. Thornton is asking $9.5 million for the 1.36-acre property, which is anchored by a stone-and-stucco walled, tile-roofed five bedroom home with 6,422 sq. ft. of interior living area.
From the large masonry motor court, the home is suitably atmospheric, with the stone exterior extending to the garage, and a small loggia, lantern sconces, and a recessed entry all contributing to the romance.
Inside, it is as contemporary as expected, with sweeping living areas, stone floors, and a bit of rusticity by way of what appears to be reclaimed timber and Venetian plaster. The kitchen gets a fairly dark treatment, with mosaic tile backsplashes extending to the ceiling and stone countertops and island cap, and earthy brown stain for the cabinets.
Views from certain rooms of the house are extraordinarily fine; the vista offered by the window over the master bath’s soaking tub is notable. Outside, the acreage is occupied by lawns, hedgerows, a guest house, and a large patio with a zero-edge pool and a loggia, all easily accessible via the main living area’s sliding glass.
