Meet the Cadillac LYRIQ. The new mid-range GM EV first appeared in concept form last summer. The vehicle is significant for a whole host of reasons, not least because it is a fully electric consumer production vehicle badged with the crest of the most recognizable luxury car brand in America.
A hopeful gesture that indicates broad adoption of alternative powertrains in SUV-land in the not-too-distant future; in keeping with its primary market, however, it is an SUEV.
The model is priced from $58,795, putting it up against European competitors. Its sense of style appears to find a sweet spot between American and European design sensibilities.
The LYRIQ’s nose is busy, with vertical LED headlamps in V-shaped sections and a grille design that’s less a grille than a glassy surface; its design suggests convergence. The glass roof is swept back, giving the LYRIQ’s profile that familiar calligraphic flourish, with a vented spoiler creating a tiered effect in the rear. The model has the familiar SUV/crossover hybrid look.
But the essence of the car is its range, power capabilities, and luxury features. A first glance at the production LYRIQ shows off a model with a range of at least 300 miles; DC fast charging restores 75 miles of range in 10 minutes. Cadillac estimates the powertrain’s horsepower rating at 340, and an estimated torque production of 325 pound-feet. Inside the cabin, a slick 33-inch LED display occupies much of the dash, and gives the interior of the model an uncluttered and spacious feel.
Cadillac will begin accepting orders for the LYRIQ this September. First deliveries are expected in the first half of 2022.
