Vice Media’s Shane Smith sold his magical Santa Monica Spanish-style estate recently. The buyer, billionaire Taylor Thomson, came along in short order. Not surprising; the compound is one of the finer examples in the area.
Smith had listed the beguiling property—which is titled Villa Ruchello—for $50 million early in the year. By early spring it had found a buyer, and closed for a whisker (or two) under $49 million.
The restored 14,000 sq. ft., thirteen-bed, thirteen-bath property packs enough period detail to charm the stripes off a tiger: tile, hewn beams, plank floors, mahogany paneling, more tile, wrought iron. Unusual details include doors with glass panels and scalloped overlays, the floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves and rail ladder in the library, a few of the light fixtures—including a particularly striking hall pendant—and the tour-de-force tile work in the master bath.
The estate measures in at 3.35 acres. The landscaping includes gardens, lawns, specimen plantings, citrus groves, and a brook with a footbridge, with a couple of guest houses, a pool and pool house, and a secluded furo scattered throughout the grounds.
Thomson’s net worth is around $9 billion, according to Bloomberg.
