Film producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg is the new owner of  a Hamptons-style mansion that’s one of the crown jewels in Los Angeles’ Mandeville Canyon community.

Kinberg—whose past production credits include 2015’s The Martian, with upcoming entries including the COVID-delayed Agatha Christie reboot Death on the Nile—paid $15.5 million for the one-acre, six-bedroom property. According to public records, the home entered the marketplace two years ago this month with an asking price a notch under $20 million.

A great Grey Gardens home—but cleaner, and presumably with no resident raccoons—this mansion is as endearingly eccentric as Aunt Mildred. Though there are many standouts among the shared living spaces and special-use rooms, the blue ribbon for most folks will be the master suite, a cupola-capped cupola architectural flourish that occupies its own corner of the home.

The home’s interior design sensibility is occasionally as charming a blend of literate urbanity and whimsy, with the kitchen sporting bright red candlelight lantern pendants, and colorful touches abounding in the furnishings and décor. Outside, a freeform, zero-edge pool and a slate patio are the highlights of an outdoor living area connected by tile footpaths and surrounded by a host of mature trees.

Kinberg’s other upcoming projects include The 355, with Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger, and Bingbing Fan.
