About a year ago, professional racer Dale Earnhardt Jr. put his charming Florida retreat up for sale for $3.7 million. The price dropped to $3.4 million in December, and that was enough to help it find a buyer; the property closed this week at $3 million on the nose.
The Key West home is borderline antebellum—it went up in the early 1860s—and features nautical design elements, a tropical mural, louvered doors and shutters, and semi-gloss hardwood a-plenty both above and below decks.
Possibly converted at some point into a nefarious business—it may’ve acted as a speak and possibly a smuggling way station during the Volstead—the main house features a hidden door installed for viewing customers in the prohibition-era gambling room that occupied the parlor. A guest house on the property brings the accommodations count to five bedrooms and four baths.
The house is situated in Old Town, and features tropical landscaping in keeping with the laid-back feel of the neighborhood. In back is the private pool and deck—the pool is, according to listing materials, one of the deepest on the island.
