The Bel-Air modern of dry-witted comedian Chelsea Handler has found a buyer. Handler first listed the gated property three years ago, asking $11.5 million. A trim here, a judicious pruning there, and the price stood at $10.5 million, which helped the deal close at $10.375 million.
Chelsea had owned the 5,600 sq. ft. house for over a decade at that point, and she’d invested heavily in it over the years. The .65-acre hillside lot allows for that desirable illusion of the far-flung, and the home’s mid-1960s design sensibility creates something of an idyll out of the interior/exterior living style. The landscaping helps greatly; windows show little but green & leafy, a constant reminder that this L.A. neighborhood offers the luxury of breathing room.
Inside the house, a kind of Spartan romanticism holds sway. Sliding and retractable glass, polished concrete and hardwood floors, hardwood ceilings, and backlit floating shelves are among the details of the main living area, which opens broadly to a second-floor balcony. The master bedroom—one of six in the home—is an absolute gem, a warm but cerebral space with built-in bookshelves, glass exterior walls, a private balcony, and exposed ceiling timber.
The outdoor living area is entirely enclosed. A pool, spa, deck, and various living, dining and lounging areas are distributed across the intimate and very private back forty.
