The MINI Cooper just keeps looking younger. For 2022, the lineup of puckish urban gadabouts features between-generation refresh updates that include a more graceful exterior design and an interior with a digital instrument panel and new upholstery.
The MINI Cooper’s nose has lost the rounded trapezoidal grille and the fog lights. Trim in Piano Black has been added, including the headlamp surrounds and the glossy border in front; the latter extends from the hood to the bottom of the front end, and swallows the hexagonal grille, bumper and ‘Air Curtain’ intakes. It’s a cleaner looking design, less busy than the outgoing version.
LED headlamps are standard for 2022. New colors for the lineup include Rooftop Grey, Island Blue and Zesty Yellow, and the trio of novel shades and various MINI trim designs looks very smart in the photo shoot. Cosmetic options for the next model year include a shading effect on the roof—a colorfully expressive individualist flourish called ‘multitone’—and ambient lighting. A sportier suspension can be optioned as well. Safety tech added for 2022 models include a ‘Lane Departure Warning’ feature.
Engine and trim levels appear to be unchanged for the upcoming model year—but, generally speaking, the same applies to the price. For 2022, both hardtop and convertible MINI Cooper models come with only a $500 premium over the outgoing year’s lineup, which makes the MINI Cooper a stubbornly good deal, as well as one of the smarter and more timeless designs in the industry.
The starting prices of the Cooper, Cooper S, and Cooper SE are $23,750, $27,750, and $30,750, respectively. The John Cooper Works model stickers at $33,750. Four-door models carry a $1,000 premium while the convertible roof adds $5,000.
