McLaren Unveils U.S.-Only Sabre Hypercar

McLaren’s 15-example Sabre supercar was unveiled this week by McLaren Beverly Hills, who delivered the first unit to its buyer just in time for Christmas. Looking something like a mythological creature—front Senna, back Speedtail—the car developed by McLaren Special Ops was designed, in part, by the buyers who prepaid to have one delivered.

The model sports the McLaren 4L biturbo V8, a paragon of efficiency from which McLaren engineers appear to wring additional power when they need to; this time around, the tweaks bring the rating to 824 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The Sabre packs a non-hybrid drivetrain, and is the most powerful gas-only model to emerge from the company, capable of reaching a top speed of 218 MPH.

Although each example is going to be singular—in keeping with the tastes of the customer who ordered it—the car’s fundamental design language is as brash and aspiringly iconoclastic as any previous McLaren; the company has derived its brand identity from matching the obsessive performance envelope-pushing of its engineers with a strikingly aggressive sense of style. The Sabre’s particular version of audacity is somewhat softer than the Senna, with a layered look to the profile that is somewhat more subtle. Dihedral doors, and a large, adjustable rear wing add the requisite drama to the design aggregate.

McLaren did not reveal the cost of the Sabre. Judging by the sticker price of the Senna and Speedtail, it is most assuredly north of $1 million. About $2 million would be a safe guess.
