Paul Simon Lists Leafy Connecticut Spread Significantly Below Purchase

Singer-songwriter Paul Simon listed this bucolic and pre-war historic getaway in Connecticut’s Fairfield County in the spring of 2019, asking $13.9 million. The home didn’t attract a buyer at that price, however, and moving into the winter of 2020 Simon decided to trim the ask and give the listing another go.

The property is now priced at $11.9 million, which—astonishingly—puts a closing at the current ask in the red; Simon and his wife, singer Edie Brickell, paid $16.9 million for the estate nearly twenty years ago.

The main house dates to 1938, and features Georgian architecture and a whitewashed brick exterior that has weathered—artificially or naturally—very well indeed; it gives the impression of having settled admirably into its 32 acres of grounds over the decades. Its East Coast traditionalism is postcard-worthy; the front lawn is presided over by a pair of ancient oaks, and the entrance is classically modest, with neoclassical flourishes and a fanlight window over a dark blue door.

The interiors are bright and refined; details include plank and tile floors, dentil moldings, and many sets of French doors. Standout spaces include the library, which is anchored by a graceful fireplace and features built-in shelving and paneling, and the two sunrooms which are arranged on either side of the home.

The property’s acreage is luxuriously meandering, and at some point along the way a 2,400 sq. ft. guest house was added. The grounds are otherwise given over to a secluded idyll of woodland, water, gardens, and meadow, with what appears to be a Gunite pool providing cooling in warmer months.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel formed Simon & Garfunkel in 1956; Simon was the songwriting wiz. Three of their songs reached the number one spot on the U.S. singles charts: “The Sound of Silence,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and “Bridge over Troubled Water.” Simon went on to have a successful solo career after the pair split up in 1970. He is the recipient of sixteen Grammy Awards.
