In March of this year, Aston Martin unveiled the V12 Speedster in concept form. Six months later and the flashy, windshield-free mix of 1950s racing—specifically the Aston DBR1 that took home LeMans honors toward the end of the decade—and modern aircraft design is back as a prototype.
The Speedster was developed with the help of Boeing, and Aston’s description tells us that its shape was inspired by the F/A 18. Built by Aston’s Q division, the two-seater features dramatic cowlings and a double oval cockpit that is bisected by a carbon fiber partition. It is dressed in Skyfall Silver, with black accents.
The V12 powering the Speedster is Aston’s alloy 5.2L biturbo that, in this case, delivers 700 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque at peak. An eight-speed automatic gearbox, a limited-slip differential, and adaptive aero. The car’s top speed is 186 MPH. Production is set to be limited to 88 examples.
With no autumnal auto show in which to show off such a figurehead statement, Aston was left with one option: to reveal photos of the prototype.
The V12 Speedster is priced at $950,000. Deliveries are expected in the first quarter of 2021.
