When in New York, Forest Whitaker has a new place to hang his hat: this duplex apartment on the Upper East Side. The actor purchased early this fall for $1.6 million against a $1.74 million asking price.

The Lenox Hill co-operative building contains nine units in its five floors of living space. Whitaker’s apartment is garden level, and includes a cozy, landscaped, neoclassical-inflected courtyard paved in brick as part of its living area.

The main living area allocates the bulk of its available space to the living room; the kitchen gets utilitarian shrift size-wise, but is large enough for ambitious bouts of culinary adventure. A fireplace, ornamental hardwood columns in the Ionic style, and pale plank hardwood floors complete the composition.

The apartment’s two bedrooms include a master with a private, enclosed terrace accessible via a set of glass doors.

Whitaker’s upcoming projects include Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, with Keegan-Michael Key and Ricky Martin. He also stars in Aretha Franklin’s biographical film Respect alongside Jennifer Hudson; the film will be released next year.
