Pricing information for the top-tier Mercedes SUV, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 was revealed this month. The behemoth luxury truck comes with a base sticker of $161K in 2021, less delivery fees, which bring the tally to $162K.
The revival of the Maybach marque is intended to appeal to the well-heeled customer seeking a road-going trophy. Yet, the price point aggressively undercuts competitors in the rarified segment of ultra-premium SUVs. For comparison, the Aston Martin DBX starts $190K. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is a whole ‘nother level, at least in terms of price; it starts around $330,000.
Part of the appeal of owning a Maybach is the cachet carried by the marque. It puts the driver behind the wheel of a car that harkens back to the golden age of the automobile, and of course ownership expands the narrative to suggest the aristocratic.
As the SUV in the Maybach lineup, the GLS is designed to be visually striking, immediately recognizable as potently powerful and packed with interior features that swaddle drivers and their passengers in luxurious comfort and ambience. To that end, the Maybach GLS’s exterior sports a special grille and optional two-tone paintwork.
The Maybach GLS is powered by the same 4L V8 biturbo M177 engine that drives a bevy of AMG models—including the GT—as well as a couple of Aston Martin models, the DB11 and Vantage. In the GLS 600, the engine produces 550 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque.
Inside the cabin, the luxurious touches include 64-color ambient lighting, Mercedes’ Intelligent Light System, a panoramic roof, and temperature-controlled cup holders. The 4MATIC system is standard.
The Maybach GLS 600 is due in dealerships late in the year.
