SSC Tuatara Breaks Fastest Production Car Record, Hits 331 MPH on the Way

SSC North America’s Tuatara, an F1-inspired hypercar loaded with a powertrain capable of producing upwards of 1750 horsepower, debuted in Pebble Beach in 2018. The car entered production in Washington State in 2019, and began delivering to customers earlier this year. The model is equipped with a 5.9L V8 built by Nelson Racing Engines.

SSC was, at one time, Shelby SuperCars, a company that knew a thing or two about designing road-going rockets. The Tuatara was, in some way, a culminating statement from the company, following their inaugural effort, a model that was called the Ultimate Aero, a 1,200-horspower hypercar that is the progenitor of the Tuatara.

The Ultimate Aero’s speedometer could hit 256 MPH before the car had reached the apex of its capabilities, which was enough to earn it a Guinness Record honor for several years running in the mid-2000s: fastest production car. Bugatti and Koenigsegg subsequently duked it out for several years over bragging rights, while SSC toiled away in the shadows.

Now—briskly—arrives news that SSC’s Tuatara may be able to wear the fastest car mantle into the mid-2020s. This fall, the Tuatara was clocked at 331.15 MPH in its fastest run, and 301.07 in its second-fastest, for an average of 316 MPH, thus breaking the former record set by the Koenigsegg Agera RS. A Guinness representative was present at the record-breaking, so it does appear to be official.
