A penthouse unit in the Zaha Hadid Building, a residential mid-rise in Manhattan, sold this autumn after several years on the market—but for quite a bit under the asking price. The property was initially listed with a sanguine $50 million price tag; this month, Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Wes Edens took possession of the unit for a little more than $20.2 million.
The striking building opened in 2017. It is located in the Chelsea neighborhood, and contains thirty-nine units in its eleven stories. The building’s architecture features the graceful evocations of geometry distinct to Hadid’s style, and stainless steel trim that was crafted by hand.
The penthouse in question is a 6,853 sq. ft. triplex with five bedrooms and seven baths. A sculptural staircase transitions between the levels—along with an elevator—floors are finished in understated hardwood, and glass walls and 10’ windows wash the living spaces in natural light. The great room is a space of yawning scale; it measures 1250 square feet by itself, and takes in panoramic views of the city.
Amenities in the unit include a media room, a library and a master suite with a private balcony and two baths. Outside, a roof-level terrace complex hugs three sides of the building, augmenting the living area by 2,000 additional sq. ft. A pavilion and lounge is the centerpiece of the top level, creating an unusually fine space for entertaining.
Edens’ net worth is around $1 billion.
