It took about two and a half years for Rob Lowe to sell his estate in Montecito, but this fall an acceptable offer for the property did appear, and the home’s listing has now closed.
The house initially hit the market under Lowe’s ownership in 2018, when it asked $47 million; a relisting a little over a year later found it reduced to $42.5 million. In the end, Lowe fared better than that, though, as the home’s new owner was willing to spend $45.5 million on the singular, and very expansive, retreat.
The property’s sylvan, gated drive sets up a suitable romantic start for what is to come, with fairly boisterous flora flanking the approach; a meditative green tunnel of a preamble. As the house comes into view, it does so framed by the Pacific and the Santa Ynez Mountains, while in back a football field-sized lawn stretches away to the lot line.
The home—which is designed in the Georgian style—is fairly recent. Custom-built by Lowe as a family retreat, it was completed in 2009. Its interior living spaces measure about 10,000 sq. ft., and it contains six bedrooms and at least eleven baths. The living style makes for a curious sense of equipoise, with casual cottage and farmhouse design elements mixed with overt, distinguished craftsmanship touches that include stained glass panes, moldings, coffered ceilings and crystal chandeliers.
To help fill out the nearly 3.5-acre lot, a pool with fountain jets, a pool house, a guest house, and a tennis court are all featured on the grounds.
Lowe’s recent films include last year’s Netflix rom-com Holiday in the Wild with Kristin Davis. He currently stars in television series 9-1-1: Lone Star with Liv Tyler.
