Earlier this year, the two main Southern California residences of soap opera maven Lee Phillip Bell, who passed away in February of this year, hit the open market.
The first to appear was Bell’s Malibu retreat, an overhauled 1920s farmhouse that listed at $21.5 million and sold at $18.3 million. About three months later, Bell’s Beverly Hills compound listed at $39 million. Toward the end of September that property sold to none other than LeBron James, who stepped up with a $36.75 million dollar offer and closed the listing.
The distinguished property occupies a hilltop location that offers panoramic views of the city. The architecture is Spanish Ranch-style, and the home’s history dates back to the mid-1940s. The listing specifies no names when it casually mentions that the estate has been home to ‘multiple, famed Hollywood royalty,’ but it is widely known that the property was once home to Katharine Hepburn.
The estate begins with a gated brick drive lined with neatly groomed hedges, and progresses at leisure to a motor court. Highlights of the home’s exterior include the patio with fountain centerpiece that overlooks downtown, the solarium—which is illuminated by a quartet of roof lights—and the paver courtyard, which contains a fountain as well.
Inside, concessions to the modern age include some of the staple amenities of a home of this stature, including a screening room. Accommodations in the main house include a pair of expansive suites, and there are two guest houses on the property. A tennis court with a spectator stand and a pool with a pool house are also featured on the 2.5 acres of grounds.
