Financial whiz and billionaire Nicolas Berggruen augmented his estate in Los Angeles this summer by picking up the house next door. The new acquisition sapped $22.5 million from Berggruen’s coffers; it also allowed him to expand the size of the Holmby Hills estate to nearly seven acres.

The house will make a dandy guest home, but the real story is the property’s 2.2 acres, which are landscaped as semi-forest, with woods and gardens; a few gnarled evergreens stand as the ancient sentries of the grounds. A koi pond, a stone-bordered swimming pool, a tennis court, stone walking paths and staircases, and water features also pop up on a survey of this charming spot.

The residences on the property include a two-bedroom house and a pool house. The main house boasts a great room with a raw wood cathedral ceiling and a stone fireplace; its master bedroom also features a cathedral ceiling, and corner French doors that open onto a balcony. The pool house features a living room with a wall of glass, a fireplace, wood paneling, and plank hardwood floors.

The purchase brings Berggruen’s total purchases in this corner of Holmby Hills to over $63 million.

Berggruen’s net worth is north of $1 billion.
