Missouri Home With Nine-Cell Jail Hits the Market at $350K

If you’ve got a passel of teenagers you just can’t control, this home in Missouri might be the ticket: it comes with its own jail, which should really put the teeth in a lesson about the long-term benefits of tough love. Let ’em out for good behavior, though.

Aside from the all-business jail—which looks quite forbidding—the 1875-built Federal-style house is a charmer. Its brick exterior and architectural flourishes, including dentils under the eaves, a rusticated stone foundation, and a mix of window shapes and ornamental brickwork, gives it a marvelous sense of history.

The jail entrance is in back, where bars on the first and second floor windows drive home the consequences of cattle rustling. Quite different from the home’s interiors, which are tasteful and warm and show signs of a recent renovation. Original details include coal-burning fireplaces with marble surrounds and carved mantels, pocketing doors with filigreed brass hardware, millwork and, perchance, at least some of the light fixtures.

In case you’re wondering, the home was built in 1875 and belonged to the local sheriff.

An unusual opportunity.
