Ashley Benson—of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ fame—was back on a house-buying lark in Laughlin Park this summer. It is the second time the actor has purchased in this corner of Los Feliz; back in 2018, she picked up a charming 1920’s Spanish Eclectic cottage for $1.8 million, putting it back on the market at $2.5 million a year later, and ultimately selling it for $2.14 million in January of this year. Her previous dealings also include a Hollywood Hills home that she sold for $2.7 million.
Ms. Benson’s new investment in the enclave is a Mediterranean Revival dating to 1930: the Sparks-McLaren House, which hadn’t surfaced on the market in nearly fifty years when it appeared last summer. Its exterior features include a shallow-pitched tile roof, stucco walls, a Juliet balcony, and window shutters. Architect Arthur Kelley designed the house; his other residential projects include Hef’s mansion.
The home’s interiors are faithfully period, but quite understated. There’s a fair amount of dark wood, including rough-hewn exposed beams and joists, but a bright white treatment balances out the toning nicely. French doors, casement windows, and fireplaces are features of the living spaces; highlights include a wood-paneled library/office with built-in shelving, a wine room, and the covered balcony porch. A pool with a brick surround is positioned near the motor court.
Benson stars alongside Ewan McGregor and Val Kilmer in the upcoming film The Birthday Cake.
