Airstream Basecamp 20 Offers More Space, 20X Adds Ruggedness

It’s high summer, which means it’s a good time for a roadgoing daydream. These particular escapist accessories come by way of Airstream, a company which has represented summer dreams fulfilled since the years before WWII. They’re variations that expand upon the company’s 16-foot Basecamp model.

Airstream’s designs are keeping up with the demands of the contemporary, but they haven’t lost the metallic fundamental that has defined the brand’s offerings since the early days of the company’s history. The streamline sensibility—adopted during the early years of flight, and inspired by fuselage designs—has been modified somewhat in the Basecamp design language, though.

What that means is that these two new trailers, the Basecamp 20 and Basecamp 20X, are, like the original Basecamp model, a bit boxier from the outside than a classic Airstream. However, what the exterior gives way to inside is a marvelously efficient use of space.

The interiors are models of engineering, with a bright living style that is gracefully utilitarian. Space is inventively employed in double-duty contexts; for example, sleeping quarters and cooking elements are handily squirreled away when not in use, opening up seating and counter areas.

The Basecamp 20 falls into the middle slot in the lineup—bigger than the standard Basecamp but smaller than the 20X. Like the 16, the 20 and 20X Basecamp variants offer full connectivity, a tankless water heater, and a furnace. The 20X adds additional rough-and-ready off-road potential and a hardier build for wilderness usage.
