A home designed as part of the Case Study program in Southern California has hit the open market, albeit as part of a larger estate which was, at one time, the home of Sam Simon, the co-creator of the long-running animated TV series The Simpsons. CSH #20—designed by noted modernist architect Richard Neutra—is located in Pacific Palisades, and incorporated as a guest house into a property that features a more recent, 7,100 square foot, four-bedroom home.
Thankfully, the point was to make Case Study #20—a.k.a. the Bailey House—the coolest guest house in Southern California; to that end, its midcentury style has been restored to its former glory by Marmol Radziner. The bright slash of primary color of the kitchen cabinetry, the period-correct fridge, the hardwood and terrazzo are all part of the composition. It is connected to a smaller structure by a covered walkway.
The Bailey house is extraordinarily glassy, even for a modern, and the divisions between indoor living areas and outdoor spaces are at times marvelously fuzzy; witness the living room. The house also features a practical masonry fireplace, and mahogany and birch accents and paneling.
The main house carries the spirit of its neighbor. The home was designed as an energy-efficient, toxin-free residence by Simon, who passed away in 2015.
The property is currently owned by Lorna Jane and Bill Clarkson, founders of women’s activewear brand Lorna Jane.
