We’re always excited to see a new Mercedes-Maybach entry. The brand revival restores a coach-built feel to the Mercedes family; each Maybach seems to carry with it nostalgia for the golden age of automotive touring.
And these are touring cars, make no mistake; positioned laterally from Maybach is AMG, the marque to turn to if you prefer your daily commute to be more thrilling than blissful. A Maybach is an ultimate luxury car. The S650 is, however, loaded with an AMG M279 engine. The 6L V12 biturbo makes up to 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque; heavy as the S650 is, that’s enough power to get the behemoth to 60 in less than five seconds.
The 2020 Maybach S650 Night Edition takes the production S650 and gives it a slick cosmetic veneer. It’s a limited-production variation on the standard model; Maybach will only make 15 of them. Each example features an exterior paint job in Obsidian Black. Flat black rims are part and parcel of the theme—and there is a terrific amount of carbon fiber involved.
On the exterior of the Night Edition, carbon fiber components include the trunk lip spoiler. Inside, the glistening exotic hardwood has been replaced with carbon fiber; black Napa leather is used for trim. Maybach knew that a ‘murdered-out’ look would be considered dreadfully déclassé by the average S650 tire-kicker with the cash to convert, so they added some chrome to the exterior and covered the seats in a soft, warm shade of tan.
The S650 Night Edition is available this spring and summer, but the 15 will presumably be gone soon, so if you like the look, don’t tarry. And bring $250K.
