A piece of automotive history has come up for sale. A Lamborghini LM002, the short-lived outback-ready ancestor of the Urus, which was designed like a super-Land Rover and built in the 1980s.

Looking at the LM002 now—we checked it out some years back, when the Urus was just establishing a foothold in the SUV market, and launching the category of ultra-SUV—it’s clear that it prefigures both the Urus and Hummer designs as well.

The extra-wide body, the semi-bed in back, the quasi-military shaping, all contributed to the Hummer. And, guess what? In the late 1970s, Lamborghini’s own Cheetah prefigured the LM002, and it, too, has an interesting tale to tell. Like the LM002, Lambo had designs on selling the Cheetah to governments for military use, but that never came to pass in either case. Sticker shock? Not quite. The vehicle was simply too similar to another manufacturer’s SUV, and was sued out of existence.

All of this makes the LM002 an important chapter in automotive design, as well as a rare bird: only 300 rolled off the production line. This particular LM002 was restored by British firm Bell Sport and Classic. It is finished in Blu Acapulco Metallizato, and has less than 15,000 miles on the odometer. It’s on the market for 285K GBP.
