David Geffen’s nose for business led him to this unique bargain of a property: a modern-style mansion on a whopping 3.25 acre slice of Beverly Hills. When it first listed in the early days of 2019, the Richard Meier-designed house had been priced by former owner Casey Wasserman—an entertainment executive and founder of Wasserman Media Group—at $125 million. In December, the price had dropped to $82.5 million.
Geffen paid $68 million for it, one heck of a departure from the initial ask. $125 million was a somewhat delirious price, even if the property is an unusually fine one, and the house one of the most literate in Beverly Hills. But at the selling price the home was an opportunity Geffen could not pass up.
The home’s exterior is heavily naturalistic; clad in white oak, its exterior style is supported by a rusticated stone wall. Perspective is beautifully balanced within the home, and the great room’s evocation of space is both thrilling and sublimely affirming. Amenities in the 18,500 square-footer include a gym measuring 1,150 square feet, a screening room, and maid’s quarters. There are six bedrooms and 15 baths in all.
Three original properties went into the three-acre lot. The property is situated in a particularly quiet corner of the city, and uses its acreage for privacy, quiet, and a spirit of meditative escapism. An 85’ zero-edge pool and pool house, as well as expansive patio and terrace space, completes the picture-postcard SoCal living style.
Geffen’s net worth is north of $8 billion.
