The 2021 BMW 4-Series Coupe is only a few months away from appearing in U.S. dealerships. That butterfly grille will catch the eye of even the casual fan of the brand, and establish this 4 Coupe as a youthful and visually daring new iteration, but the sophomore version of the modestly priced performance car has more than that going for it when it comes to changes.
In keeping with BMW strategy, the mild-hybrid version of the drivetrain—augmented with a 48-volt system for a modest boost—is reserved for the AWD M440i xDrive, joining that variant’s 3L inline six cylinder turbo, which produces 382 horsepower.
The M440i xDrive comes with accents in Shadow Line Black or Cerium Gray, and driverly enhancements like the limited-slip differential from the M Sport feature set. But either way, M-enhanced or not, the 4-Series boasts a lower center of gravity, a considerably longer and wider body, and better aero.
The RWD standard, AWD optional 430i—with or without xDrive—comes with a 2L four that delivers up to 255 HP and 294 lb-ft of torque. Like its M-oriented sibling, power is sent to the wheels via a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. There will be no manual; apparently, sales of 2019s with the stick option just didn’t make the transmission diversity pay off. Oh, well.
The 2021 4-Series cabin features a dual screen configuration, with an 8.8” for infotainment, as well as a hybrid instrument readout blending physical and 5.1” screen. Options can add a full-screen instrument array, as well as a 12.3” infotainment dash.
