Tyler Perry once owned this formal estate. The house is situated in a particularly sylvan corner of the Atlanta suburb of Buckhead. Perry bought the land in 2005, paying $9 million, so we suppose this is the house that jokes built. Well, one of ‘em anyway. Jackie Gleason’s estate comes to mind when considering the custom homes of famous comedians.
As for this property: Perry listed it for the first time in 2015, asking $25 million. He didn’t manage to sell it at ask, but he did get $17.5 million for it in the spring of 2016.
The home was owned by its now-former owner for about four years. But the estate sold again, this month, and for just $15 million, almost three million under its previous selling price. The man who bought it is Steve Harvey.
The estate is crowned by a mansion that measures about 35,000 square feet. There are just seven bedrooms in the home, giving the rooms plenty of space, especially the master. The home begins with a set of wrought iron-decorated entry doors that open onto a stone-floored foyer with a double staircase and a grand crystal chandelier. As the home develops, the examples of craftsmanship accumulate; the list includes stenciled tray ceilings, frescoes, hardwood paneling, and carved stone fireplaces.
The kitchen features a coffered ceiling—an unusual choice for a kitchen—and there are buttress supports in the massive home theater. A lounge, an underground ballroom, a reading room and a massive great room with a second-story ceiling are other outstanding spaces in the home.
The grounds extend to seventeen acres. Exterior living spaces and amenities include a massive terrace, walking paths, groomed tiered landscaping, baroque gardens, a bar, lawns, and a tennis court.
