For about a week now, the story about the Chi-town trucker and his boss’s Ferrari GTC4Lusso has both galvanized and polarized readers. The image has been interpreted, generally, as a triumph of the working man: the semi crushing the symbol of economic extravagance and oppression.

The stories that quickly developed varied mightily. One told it this way: the owner of the trucking company made a decision to stop paying his drivers during a period of crisis. Come-uppance ensued, poetic justice evened the score, what have you. Another had the company owner as the real target of the trucker’s wrath.

The backstory is, unsurprisingly, far more mundane: a man who’d reportedly been on the payroll for about a week, and delivered only one load, had been let go because of behavioral issues. A source quoted by The Drive said the trucker refused any and all severance terms offered and insisted on remaining with the company. Things deteriorated to the point that he became enraged, so he inquired with the boss whether the Ferrari was his. After receiving an affirmative response, the trucker ran out into the lot, climbed into one of the company rigs, and crushed the exotic car.

The owner of the company tried to put the brakes on the disaster, and was—according to the source—nearly run over and killed as a result. He called the police after the damage had been done, and the trucker was arrested and charged.
