Investment guru Henry Kravis put his Colorado retreat up for sale about a year ago. Kravis was looking for $46 million for the ranch, and came pretty close when former New York mayor and fellow billionaire Mike Bloomberg stepped up this spring with $44.8 million to secure the 4,600-acre property as an escape solution.
The estate is located in Western Colorado, and crowned with a 20,000 square-foot main house. The home contains five bedrooms, including a massive master suite, but most of the area is given over to shared living spaces and a lengthy series of amenities that includes a spa, a home theater, a wet bar, a billiards room, and a games room.
The interiors of the house are a mix of Rocky Mountain alpine and high-dollar ranch. At its best, it is earthy, cozy, and substantially affirming. There is of course a great deal of timber and stone involved, and space is frequently evoked as sheer breathing room, echoing the massive acreage that surrounds the house.
The property also includes a series of secondary residences: a pair of guest houses, a carriage house, and a caretaker’s home. A golf course and a pool offer warm-weather distraction, but any Rocky Mountain dreamer worth his salt is going to grab his Sage 6-weight and head for the river during the softer months.
Kravis’ net worth is around $6.5 billion. Bloomberg’s is estimated at $58 billion.
