Venerable Swedish mattress-maker Hästens may manufacture the most luxurious mattress in history. At $400K, it’s almost certainly one of the most expensive ever produced.
The bed is the work of the luxury marque and Ferris Rafauli Design, a luxury interiors specialist based in Ontario. It’s called the Grand Vividus, and one example takes 600 hours to complete.
The Grand Vividus is hand-stitched; materials include leather and suede, with a metal frame designed to last half a century. Flax, wool and cotton also help make up the mattress, as well as horsehair, each in judicious quantities. The culminating experience is, as Drake told Architectural Digest, a floating sensation, which sounds like drifting off to the land of nod on a cushion of dreams.
The design is also remarkable. The box spring—far from traditional ideas of what a box spring should be—features the look of an old-fashioned steamer trunk. The whole thing is finished in a check color scheme. Black looks most dramatic, but a blue and white version boasts a cottage décor look.
