Actress-turned-director Penny Marshall’s estate has relisted her home in the hills above Sunset with a reduced asking price. The property first appeared on the market in January, asking $7.2 million; it is now priced at just under $7 million.
The 1953-built home is a rambler; with interior living areas measuring just under 10,000 square feet, its footprint is a lengthy one. Renovations have been minimal over the years, and to view the glossy plank oak, masonry fireplace, and papered ceiling in person is to step back in time a little. The kitchen is too cool for school, with soft green tones, linoleum, Formica, rounded edges, and a padded booth for a breakfast nook; the room is illuminated by fluorescent tubes.
There are eight bedrooms and ten baths in the estate, including those in the guest wing. Plentiful accommodations, but then Marshall’s largesse extended to long-term guests; according to her biography and an interview with Queen Latifah, actor Joe Pesci wound up staying for a few years in the 1980s. The freeloader!
The lot extends to 1.33 acres. Views of the city are excellent, and recreational spaces begin and end with a brick terrace and a pool. Fruit trees, palms, and lawns fill out the grounds, a solid privacy buffer that makes the estate a true sanctuary.
Marshall’s director credits include the 1986 classic Big and the 1990 film Awakenings, which garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. She passed away in 2018.
