A new McLaren long tail is in the cards for the 2021 model year, the British automaker revealed this week. The model is called the 765LT, and it is the newest in McLaren’s Super Series, joining the 720S and 720S Spider as one of the company’s rarified upper-echelon offerings; as a direct progenitor, though, it represents the evolution of 2016’s 675LT.

Like the 720S and its drop-top sibling, the 765LT is track-oriented—that is, more profoundly than any other McLaren that’s come down the pike. It’s stiffer, it’s louder, and its more intense behind the wheel. This is a car for a serious driver.

At about 3000 pounds, the 765LT lighter even than the Senna, from which it borrows a high performance fuel pump, among other components. Lightweight competition seats, polycarbonate glass, and plentiful carbon fiber keep the car’s weight down.

The 765LT’s V8—borrowed, in turn, from the 720S—can deliver up to 754 horsepower; the model can reach 60 MPH in 2.7 seconds, and 124 in 7.2 seconds. The titanium exhaust, McLaren says, is part of the reason; the system’s airflow is improved over previous designs, with gases exiting via the conspicuous quartet of pipes that help define the rear of the car. A large hydrolic rear wing also helps define the rear of the model, and it helps with downforce, too.

McLaren will only built 765 examples of this particular long tail. The model’s base sticker is north of $350K; deliveries begin in the autumn.
