‘American Idol’ Creator Simon Fuller Takes $28M for Quintessential Bel Air Villa

Late last fall, Simon Fuller—creator of the ‘Idol’ franchise—and his wife, Natalie Swanston, relisted their estate in Bel-Air for $32.5 million. The couple had, at that time, been wrestling with selling the villa for about a year; it entered the market in the fall of 2018 with a price tag of $37.5 million.

The couple has, at last, seen the home into the sunset, but they had to accept an offer nearly $10 million under their initial asking price. Sanguine as that ask was, it does in some way fit the grandiose Hollywood house, with its dramatically contrasting whitewashed masonry exterior and black trim, its generous variety of window shapes, its neoclassical flourishes, and its luxurious, winged design.

The 7-bedroom home’s interiors are refined, moody, and occasionally adventurous, with a good sense of proportion and period features that include narrow-plank oak floors, crown moldings, and a floating, curving staircase. The tonal scheme is generally very neutral, but occasionally drifts into shadowy cool tones; the home’s entertainment room with wet bar is a knockout, with an arched entry, contrasting marble floors, and dark blue walls.

That’s one standout space. The kitchen is another—it keeps to grayscale, with a pattern floor that is downright hypnotic. The home’s turret contains a couple of others; a circular library on one floor, a workspace and office on the other.
