Does BMW have another i-Series car on the way? It appears so, as the company’s newest press releases include a rundown of a new concept car, the Concept i4, to flesh out the series, which—as of now—only includes two production models, the i3 and i8.

The i3 is an affluent everyman’s compact, a youthful ride for eco-conscious professionals. The i8 is a sports EV which, while making a solid daily driver, looks very much the part of the vehicle for weekend thrills. The i4 fills the role of performance family car, a glaring hole in a sparse lineup, and moves the i-Series from the fringe exotic category into the mainstream.

This is the first look at the model which, BMW assures us, will begin to roll in 2022. Right now, its design language is last-century near-future, with the exaggerated kidney grille that had adorned BMW’s more forward-thinking concepts for several years. A profile reveals a fastback shape with fluid lines and refined side creases.

The interior is pleasingly minimalist, as expected, with a logic-oriented layout that is uncluttered by ornament—although luxury touches do come through, most notably by way of a Swarovski crystal wheel on the console. The dash is occupied by two large screens, and a glass roof liberates the space.

How similar the production version will be remains to be seen. But the refined shape and considered interior layout of the Concept i4 should reemerge when the car reaches dealerships in two years.
