Frank Sinatra’s Malibu Home Snapped Up by Mindy Kaling for $9.6M

This month, actor Mindy Kaling invested $9.55 million in a Malibu property with substantial entertainment-world history: the beachfront spot was, at one time, a quiet retreat for Frank Sinatra and his wife Barbara.

The purchase marks a bit of a departure in taste for Kaling, who previously displayed a fondness for 1920s Spanish-style homes. She’s bought and sold two examples in the Los Angeles area since she rose to prominence on ‘The Office’; she sold the first, located in Hollywood Hills, for $1.6 million in the spring of 2017, with the second—an unmitigated charmer of a cottage in Beverly Grove—following about a year later, and selling for $2 million.

The Malibu home was built in 1992. It was designed and constructed specifically for the Sinatras by Edward Grenzbach, who also built homes for Cher and Johnny Carson, among others.

The interiors feature a unique, wide-open design that follows the length of the nearly 5,900 square foot structure. Plank ceilings, tile floors and extensive built-ins are standout details; the shared living space contains a wet bar and sliding glass opening onto the beachside outdoor living area, where an awning presides over a broad patio.

Prior to being for sale, the property was offered as a rental for the 2018 high summer season—at $110K per month.
