Toward the end of last summer, Quest Nutrition was bought out by Simply Goods for a billion dollars. Soon thereafter, Quest founders Ron and Shannan Penna decided to make a pair of judicious purchases in Southern California. The two residences—one in Los Angeles, the other in Thousand Oaks—add up to a $15 million tally.
In Thousand Oaks, the couple purchased a 2009-built 11-bedroom Hidden Valley Mediterranean for around ten million dollars. It’s a true rambler, with a courtyard-style motor court on one wing. The 11,000 square feet of interiors are spacious, and a bit grandiose; the palette is occasionally warm, and occasionally neutral. But the property is a big part of the story in this case—it extends to sixty acres, with a large pool and recreation area, 9-hole golf course, guest cottage, and of course equestrian trails and facilities.
The 1,500 square-foot, three-bedroom Los Angeles home is situated in a corner of the city that might be called Baja Brentwood. The home is a brand new postmodern farmhouse style. From the street, it looks carefully composed, with colors and materials including blue, white, vertical clapboard, and plank timber. The interiors feature herringbone patter walls, wide-plank hardwood floors, a home theater, built-ins, and pocketing glass opening onto the pool and patio.
Fellow Quest co-founders Tom and Lisa Bilyeu plunked down a substantial sum for a trophy estate in the hills above Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, dropping $36 million on a 20,000 square-foot modern mansion. The trophy home, a recent build on a hilltop, boasts intense panoramic views, and a 170’ pool that wraps around the house like a high-dollar lifestyle motif.
