Last summer, billionaire Peter Sperling listed a period Spanish Eclectic in Los Angeles for sale for slightly less than $21 million. The home joined another of Sperling’s West Coast properties on the open market; earlier in the year, he’d listed his mansion in the desirable San Francisco neighborhood of Russian Hill for sale, and that property was priced at nearly $14 million.
Sperling has yet to sell either home. And the Russian Hill mansion remains for sale at its initial listing price. But the stucco hacienda in L.A.—whose former owners include actor Vincent Price—saw a reduction this month, and is now asking $18.995 million.
The main home dates to 1927, and details throughout the home betray its vintage, and its association with that particularly delirious point in American history. The entrance is recessed, and features intricate carved stone, wrought iron gates, and a set of ornate lantern sconces.
The 11,653 square feet of interiors feature a long list of stylistic embellishments, including barrel ceilings, stone fireplaces, mahogany paneling, coffered ceilings, period light fixtures, narrow plank oak floors, open ceilings, and hand-painted tile.
A magnificent house, with grounds that are fittingly substantial: 1.65 acres, according to listing materials, with a pool, patios, walking paths, a cabana, a tennis court, gardens and a guest house amid luxuriantly, romantically edge-of-wild landscaping.
