Aston Martin’s soft-top Vantage variant will make it into dealerships for the 2021 model year, and that’s exciting news for those who prefer an open-air English sports car for their delirious whirlwind weekend countryside tours.
Aston’s press release on the new car—which, of course, precedes its Geneva Auto Show debut by a strategic period of time—is at pains to let convertible lovers know that its top can be lowered more quickly than any other: just 6.7 seconds when the Vantage is parked, and 6.8 seconds at up to 31 MPH. But the real story is the car’s looks.
Aston’s convertible models have always been lovely. But transitioning the graceful lines of the Vantage coupe to a roadster version has yielded a frighteningly sophisticated-looking car. The sense of proportion is arresting, with components in ideal ratio to one another, and therefore a complete lack of the over-compensating high drama that sometimes comprises the subtext of supercar design language. The upper section of its profile is slightly swept back, just enough to evoke motion at a standstill.
The Vantage’s 4L V8 produces the same 503 horsepower and 505 pound-feet of torque as it does in the coupe. The Roadster yields a negligible two-tenths of a second to its hard-top sibling in a 0-60 MPH race, and reaches the same terminal speed of 190 MPH. All other performance features transfer from Coupe to Roadster without a hiccup.
Expect to see the 2021 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster in dealerships toward the end of the year.
