SSC North America—the company that used to be Shelby SuperCars—had a busy 2019, what with putting the finishing touches on their Tuatara model and starting production. But the first Tuatara has been delivered to its owner, a certain Doctor who lives in Philly, and also owns an example of SSC’s first model, the Ultimate Aero.

For a young company, SSC has substantial performance automotive lineage to brag about: the company’s 1,200-horsepower Ultimate Aero model took home a Guinness record for fastest production car. The model could reach a staggering 256 MPH, and was king of speed until Bugatti’s pesky Veyron Super Sport came along a few years later. When the Aero reached the end of its production life span in 2017, the company was faced with a tricky predicament—how to best it.

The Tuatara is their answer to the question. The model’s engine is built by Nelson Racing Engines; it’s a lightweight V8 that displaces a massive 5.9 liters, and delivers 1,750 horsepower and 1,280 pound-feet of torque. The gearbox is an automated manual seven speed.

The Tuatara is designed to be a daily driver as much as a weekend indulgence. The interiors are luxuriously plush, with premium audio, a large touchscreen, synchro-helio doors, clearance adjustment, and climate control. But the car’s spirit is in speed, with a monocoque chassis fabricated out of aerospace-grade carbon fiber, a Track mode, and an optional High Downforce Track Pack that adds a few hundred large to the $1.6 million base sticker.
