Joseph Gordon-Levitt Sells L.A. Mid-Century Ranch Brimming With Period Charm at a Loss

Last spring, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt listed a 1960s ranch in Los Angeles for $3.85 million. He’d owned the home for about five years on the nose when it sold this winter, fetching a mere three million dollars—quite a bit short of the $3.25 million he paid for it in February of 2015.

The house dates to 1940, and carries the substantial look of a suburban build of the era. The façade features a bay window, and a covered entrance above a set of stone steps. The front door is flanked by series windows, and capped with a neoclassical pediment.

The interiors measure 3,771 square feet. Semi-gloss narrow-plank oak sets a refined tone for the living style, with louvered doors adding a little cottagey charm.

The shared living spaces are simple, spacious, and uncluttered. The living room is large and bright, with a vaulted ceiling, built-ins, and a brick fireplace. A wet bar is conspicuously featured beside the fireplace, a period embellishment that brings a certain quaintness to the room.

The kitchen, dayroom, and workshop are where the home really shows its stuff. The style, distinctive workmanship, and even the appliances and linoleum flooring in this part of the house speak fluently of the home’s era, and it’s something of a miracle they’ve survived.

Upcoming films featuring Gordon-Levitt include The Trial of the Chicago 7; the feature, directed by Aaron Sorkin, is due in theaters this year.
