With his return to the Los Angeles Lakers and his first season with the team in seven years underway, NBA star Dwight Howard took a time out to put his East Coast life behind him: he put his residence in Washington, D.C., up for sale. Which couldn’t have been easy. It’s one of the most interesting homes on the market, a tour-de-force of tasteful, inventive style.

The former Wizards player is asking $2.475 million for the property, the five-bedroom penthouse unit at the Pierce School Lofts, a boutique building nestled in the southeast corner of the H Street Corridor. The Pierce School building dates to the 1890s, and was converted into condos early in the last decade.

Units in the red brick former schoolhouse frequently cite the building’s original purpose, with living spaces sporting blackboards, and working the architecture’s turrets into the style. Howard’s unit sustains the historic feel with exposed ducts, original narrow plank oak floors, original doors, original ceilings, original cabinetry, original transom windows, and even original bathroom fixtures among the details. The condo renovation brought in an industrial staircase to bolster the loft feel and cool down the composition, which is heavy with glossy wood and red brick.

The unit is a duplex, and measures over 10,100 square feet. The kitchen adds a charming restaurant-lounge feel to the whole, occupying a significant portion of the open concept common area. A wet bar is nestled into a corner, but the most astonishing feature of the living space may be the slag glass panel that has been employed as both a centerpiece and an accent divider.
