Restoration Hardware (now RH) CEO Gary Friedman appears to buy and sell residential California properties in pairs. 2017 saw him part ways with a couple of houses in the same short period of time: one in St. Helena, and the second in Beverly Hills. The two homes sold for a combined $18.9 million.
Early 2020 found the founder of the furniture leviathan shelling out over $50 million for a pair of estates in the Post Office neighborhood of Beverly Hills. The larger of the estates is ‘The Promontory’; the property is designed around a massive, grandiose mansion that aspires to be a work of art.
The home’s façade is distinguished by the glassy two-story bank of windows that illuminate its foyer, and the carved embellishments that flank it. The interiors measure 11,000 square feet, but much of the shared space is indoor/outdoor, with a complex series of fold-away glass walls opening them up and converting them into a pavilion of sorts. The exterior of the house is given over to statuary gardens, with a two-level pool and spa, and a large patio with panoramic views that live up to the expectations established by the estate’s name.
The second property is a modern in need of TLC and much additional cashola. It’s situated on nearly three acres, though; again, the spot is a beaut, with extraordinary privacy and views a-plenty.
