The Mulsanne is on the way out, so Bentley’s begun the ceremonious process of ending the reign of the successful touring car with a limited edition that pulls out all the stops. With a bang, not a whimper was the approach to the model’s extended swan song expected by industry watchers, but the ‘6.75 Edition’ Mulsanne Bentley delivered managed to surprise ’em nonetheless.

The name is derived from the displacement of the V8 engine—6.75L—which was around long before Crewe factory craftspeople began building the Mulsanne back in 1980; the powerplant first graced a Bentley in 1959. The foundation for the edition is the Mulsanne Speed, a performance-oriented version of the model, and the 21” wheels unique to the variant are part of the 6.75 Edition’s composition.

There’s a bit of the elegiac in the edition, of course, with vintage-style gauges that reference the elder engine, and control knobs fabricated to resemble the engine oil cap. Edition badging may be spotted in the engine bay, as well as the seats, and projected via LED onto the pavement beneath the doors when getting into and out of the car.

The cabin features silver piping against color options Fireglow, Beluga, Imperial Blue and Newmarket Tan, with silver accents throughout to bolster the effect. A commemorative plaque is fitted to the console.

The Bentley press release on the subject doesn’t go as far as a definitive declaration that the 30-example production run of the special Mulsanne—handled by Bentley’s customization division, Mulliner—will in fact be the final exit for the smooth-handling road car. During this period, it may well be that Mulliner will build a Mulsanne to taste for any buyer in the market. But the evening of the model’s day in the sun has certainly arrived.
