Fisker Ocean Will Be a Game-Changing EV If It Can Deliver

In 2011, Henrik Fisker’s company, Fisker Automotive, began delivering the Karma, a grand tourer which sold well and was progenitor of the Karma Revero after Henrik sold his company to Wanxiang Group. The Karma was one of the first of its kind, and influenced luxury sports EVs to come. The Revero, in its fourth year of production, stands as enduring evidence of the design’s staying power.

Although Henrik sold the rights to the name Karma to Wanxiang, he retained rights to Fisker, and launched Fisker, Inc. in 2016. And though a series of well-publicized difficulties have come and gone, late 2019 finds the forward-thinking Finn back with his finger on the pulse of the near-future automotive reality. The new product? A $40K model called the Ocean.

The Ocean represents a major shift in approach from Fisker—away from luxury cars and toward a people’s car for the post-gasoline generation. In keeping, the Ocean is envisioned as a subscription car. The company ethos is invested in affordability and manageability; more miles at the base rate, with delivery, service, and pickup all included in the cost. Fisker, Inc. is also working with a contract-free subscription model.

Fisker intends to establish a series of ‘experience centers’ at strategic locations, including airports, suggesting the company is thinking about bridging the gap between subscription service and rental, an interesting idea which is, to the best of our knowledge, quite novel.

The company will present a full reveal of the Ocean and the Fisker platform next month in Las Vegas.
