Retired Mavericks forward and 6th highest-scoring player of all time Dirk Nowitzki will spend the holidays in a new estate in Dallas. Mr. Nowitzki spent $5.75 million on the property in the upscale Preston Hollow neighborhood; the place had been listed at $8.25 million when it hit the market in the late summer of last year.
The property is a landmark, and was owned by billionaire Charles Wyly. Wyly passed away in 2011.
The mansion, as expected, is a beaut. It was completed in 1939, and features Colonial architecture. It stands beyond and gated cobblestone drive, and boasts a neoclassical porte-cochére entry.
The home’s 11,394 square feet of interiors begin with a foyer that features narrow-plank hardwood, soft yellow walls, ornamental columns, and a staircase that rises to a curving second-floor gallery. Tones used in the home are generally soft, and vacillate between cool and warm, and surprises abound—panoramic wall covering, skylights, original fireplaces, herringbone floors, crown moldings, wainscoting, and tilework.
Standout spaces include a solarium/greenhouse with an inlaid slate floor, an entertainment room with a wet bar, and the kitchen, which is designed as catering-ready, and boasts a large butler’s pantry. The grounds extend to over 2.5 acres, and incorporate a pool house with an indoor pool, a guest house, a 5-car garage, and a tennis court.
Nowitzki spent 21 seasons with the Dallas Mavericks—the entirety of his career in the NBA—making him the only player to ever spend that much time with a team. The 14-time NBA All-Star retired this year.
