When house-hunting this fall, musician The Weeknd decided against half-measures where cost and stylization are concerned, setting his sights on a full-floor penthouse unit in the Beverly West building in Westwood and laying down $21 million to seal the deal.
The condo is as contemporary as can be, with a design sensibility that is intensely atmospheric, with LED strip accent lighting, dark-finished large-gauge herringbone hardwood floors, and wood paneling coalescing to cover the chilliness and provide the modified naturalistic veneer demanded by popular high-dollar fashion at the moment. The crown-jewel penthouses in the building are each themed and titled; The Weeknd passed on the ‘Musician’ and ‘Producer’ penthouses, selecting the ‘Mogul’ unit instead.
A highlight of the open concept shared living space is the grand marble bar, which stands as the centerpiece of the common area, and sets the tone for the living style; it is illuminated by a series of colorful hand-blown wine-bottle-inspired pendant lights. Abundant wine storage is incorporated into the hallway behind the bar.
But the penthouse has nearly 8,000 square feet with which to express itself, more than enough room to pack in a kitchen that’s downright clinical—with a series of hard, texture-free surfaces, steel-framed shelving, and boasting all sharp angles and nary a bit of softening, it’s a bit of a tour-de-force for those enamored of detachment in interior design—as well as a four bedroom and six bath accommodation layout that culminates in a very large master suite.
The master bedroom’s glass walls present spectacular city views, and a heady feeling of continuation, but each bedroom and bathroom receives its own very individual treatment, with wildly varied textures, materials, and patterns represented.
The penthouse is one of several that were completed earlier in the year, and went up for sale in August.
The Weeknd has won three Grammy Awards, released as many no. 1 albums, and as many no. 1 singles, among other accolades. He has sold over 70 million albums worldwide. Like many modern-day music heroes, he started out in the anonymity of YouTube and emerged thanks to his exceptional talent.
