Zooey Deschanel Lists Cape Cod-Style Charmer in Manhattan Beach for $6M

Smack dab in the middle of last winter, actress and chanteuse Zooey Deschanel picked up this shameless charmer of a Cape Cod-style summer cottage in Manhattan Beach for $5.58 million. Ten months later finds the property returning to the market with a few noticeable changes; Deschanel, hoping for an easy flip, has listed it at $5.975 million.

This isn’t the first time the young performer has dabbled in the Manhattan Beach residential marketplace. She purchased a similar home in the city in 2016 for $4.6 million, letting it go earlier this autumn for $4.7 million, a break-even price.

She should fare better this time around. The Atlantic-blue Cape is marvelously eccentric from the street, making a fine first impression as a contemporary interpretation of classic East Coast coastal ease, and its gated entrance is flanked by stacked stone pilasters and capped with an arbor that’s just waiting for a riot of climbing rose.

The interiors of the home are warm but not exceedingly so, and the shared living area is as open as one would expect. Details include a kitchen with a very large island and cottagey black-and-white tile counter backsplash, tongue-and-groove ceilings and wainscoting, and a brick fireplace that’s been given a light whitewash. Gone are most of the distressed hardwood floors, replaced with a more natural-toned and simple plank.

The 4,900 square-foot home’s six baths follow the period style, with fixtures and basins adding to the cohesive feel. The master suite features a bedroom with a window seat, which transitions to a private auxiliary room that could be purposed as a creative workspace; the master bath features plain white tile and a double, gym-style shower.
