The Aston Martin DBX has officially arrived.

After much teasing and testing of the waters, the company has decided there’s more money to be made with the concession to popular tastes than lost by altering the brand image. After all, an Aston grand tourer will always be an Aston grand tourer.

To be sure, the DBX’s shape looks very Aston, especially in profile, where the gracefully extended back end really shines; for an SUV, it’s a very artful look. It’s clear that Aston spent a great deal of time agonizing over the final version; five years, in fact. Of the current crop of high-dollar sport-utility vehicles, it may be tops in looks. Aston Martin is rarely outdone when it comes to the sheer sculptural beauty of its creations; the DBX will definitely attract those who think the Cullinan is stodgy, the Bentayga pompous, and the Urus like a lost soul caught between flashy crossover and fastback muscle car.

That’s good news for Aston Martin, a company which has been hurt by lagging sales even as it produces some of the most beautiful sports cars in the world. But is the DBX brash enough to attract the young wealthy buyer?

It has power, that’s for certain. Aston is using an 4L AMG V8 biturbo engine, which delivers up to 542 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque; the 9-speed gearbox is also made by Benz. Aston declares the DBX ‘quick’, and it is; 0 to 60 can be accomplished in 4.3 seconds, and the SUV’s top speed is 181 mph. Five driving modes, and a sophisticated anti-roll system are performance features of the DBX.

Aston is gambling pretty heavily on their SUV. They’ve set up a new factory in Wales to build it. Expect the model to begin rolling out of the Welsh production facility in the spring of next year. Base sticker: $189K, or $192K with destination charge.
