New to Ducati’s lineup in 2020 is a very appealing ride that could be a classic in the making: the Panigale V2. The bike’s design picks up where the now-defunct Panigale 959 model left off, but represents a significant evolution along the way. A lot of thought, discussion and experimentation went into the new Panigale, and it shows in its lovely lines, its single-sided swingarm, its tech, and its improved responsiveness despite its relatively smaller bore.
Engine efficiency has been increased with the V2. The boost isn’t terribly notable—amounting to 5 horsepower—but the bike features two injectors for each cylinder. The cylinders have been revised for lower energy loss, and a new exhaust design improves airflow. For all these reasons, the bike slots within Euro 5 standards for emissions without making concessions that hurt roadgoing performance. And the bike only weighs 388 pounds, making its 155 HP and 77 lb-ft of torque very adequate.
Most notable is the V2’s ability to reconcile touring comfort and thrills. A bike that can show a pedigree both racing-inspired and journey-inspired, and actually perform that way, is where the ‘new classic’ potential is hiding.
