Jason Statham and his wife, former Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, listed their beach house—known as the ‘Black House’—in Malibu’s Colony community this month for $19.95 million. Statham purchased the property a decade ago for $10.5 million.
The exterior of the 1965-built home is currently clad in black-stained shingles, and the street reveals a matte-black garage door as well. The relentless moodiness extends to the glass-enclosed outdoor deck before spilling into the 3,900 square feet of interior living space; when combined with the easygoing setting and wide-open interior/exterior design of the home, the tonal drama can be read as either slickly sophisticated, or a little tense for a house that clearly has taken a meditative, uncluttered Eastern design sensibility to heart.
With ornament at a minimum, space and light emphasized, and renovations including matte finished wide-plank hardwood floors, floating shelves, and neutral tones, the home generally sports a contemporary revision of midcentury style. A red brick fireplace and accent wall comes out of nowhere, but is most welcome; the overt warmth of the color and texture sets off the natural-toned wood and suggests a little emotion.
The house is a four-and-four. In keeping with Malibu beach house layouts, the master receives a prominent place in the home, and opens extravagantly onto a private balcony. Otherwise it’s extremely understated, focusing on the wonders just outside.
